Biotin; all a hoofneeds?

Biotin, also known as Vitamin H or VitaminB8, is an essential, water-soluble B vitamin often given as a supplement tohorses with weak hooves. There are only a few studies examining theeffects of biotin on horses, with inconclusive results. In practice,however, the numbers of horses with visibly improved hooves after biotinsupplementation cannot be denied.

Biotin is naturally presentin grass among other things, and Cavalor feeds are also  enriched withbiotin to encourage healthy hoof growth. In addition, some bacteria in thecolon are capable of producing biotin. Exactly how much biotin a horse requiresis unknown, but an unbalanced diet can lead to deficiencies. Practical experiencehas shown that at least 25-30 mg biotin per day is necessary to create anoticeable effect.

Cavalor Hoof Aid combinesbio-available biotinwith high doses of VitaminsA and D3.Vitamin A supports the development of the hoof wall. Coronary band inflammationis linked to a lack of Vitamin A. Vitamin D3 plays an important role in themetabolism and development of the hoof tissue as well. 

Scientific research has shownthat a combination of different ingredients is more effective than biotinalone. Cavalor Hoof Aid also contains zinc. Zinc helps withkeratin synthesis, which ensures strong, sturdy hooves. Furthermore, zincsupports the reproduction and repair of cells in the hoof and hoof wall.Cavalor Hoof Aid also contains calcium carbonate. Calcium isinstrumental in the synthesis of sulphur bridges between the proteins inthe hoof wall. Finally, methionineis an essential sulphurous amino acid that contributes to hoofflexibility.

Feeding Rate Information

Hoof wall growth starts atthe coronary band. As the hoof wall grows quite slowly,
it can take several months for new growth to become visible and results to be
easily discernible.

We recommend continuing theuse of Cavalor Hoof Aid for at least 3-6 months. Cavalor Hoof Aid isrecommended primarily for hooves with mild problems or of poor quality.
